Visiting Punta Laguna


Punta Laguna is the gateway to the Otoch Ma’ax Yetel Kooh National Protected Area, home to spider monkeys, howler monkeys, and many other types of animals and plants. Here you can find information about visiting Punta Laguna. All tours are run by local community members.

How to get to Punta Laguna:

Directions from Tulum (approximately 45 minutes):
1) Take QROO 109 West for 43km
2) At the traffic circle, take the first exit onto Quintana Roo Nuevo Durango – Coba/QROO 109
3) After 18km, arrive in Punta Laguna

From Valladolid (approximately 50 minutes):
1) Head east on Valladolid – Cancun/Mexico 180 for 27km
2) Turn right onto Chemax – Coba and continue for 31km
3) At the traffic circle, take the third exit onto Quintana Roo Nuevo Durango – Coba/QROO 109
4) After 18km, arrive in Punta Laguna

Frequently Asked Questions

1) What should I wear?
Prepare to be outdoors. Comfortable, light-weight clothing and good walking shoes are
best. Bring a bathing suit for swimming in the cenote!

2) What should I bring?
Sunscreen and bug spray are recommended. A bathing suit and towel are also encouraged
if you want to go swimming in the lagoon or the cenote. Also bring cash (both US dollars
and Mexican pesos are accepted).

3) What languages are available for tours?
Tours are offered in Spanish, English, French, and Italian.

4) What can I expect to see on the tour?
In addition to the substantial population of spider monkeys, the reserve is also home to
howler monkeys, dozens of species of tropical birds, and a diverse array of plant species
including ceiba and sapodilla trees.


5) Is the visitor experience appropriate for families with children?
Yes, children of all ages are welcome! The tour experience is family-friendly and fully
customizable to your preferences.

6) Do I need a reservation?
No! Many tour companies will organize tours ahead of time, but tours are also available
on demand during business hours, so feel free to just show up!

7) What is the best time of day to visit?
Any time between 7am and 5pm, but 3pm is typically the best time to see monkeys.

8) How long is the visitor experience?
It takes approximately 2.5 hours to complete all of the activities.
