Community-based approach
Second, we aim to practice community archaeology – archaeology with, by, and for local communities. The contemporary residents of Punta Laguna will directly benefit from research they help design and carry out. Project members and community residents will together decide what information should be sought about the archaeological site and how best to present that information. Together, we will generate and disseminate information about the site; preserve cultural heritage; and increase the revenue the community generates from their ecotourism cooperative by broadening the scope of the tours to include information not only about spider monkeys, but also about archaeology.

About Dr. Kurnick
Dr. Kurnick’s work specializes in ancient Mesoamerica, with particular emphasis on the ancient Maya, and the creation. She is a recipient of grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Geographic Society among other organizations, and has held a Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellowship from the University of Colorado Boulder and a Research Fellowship from the Gerda Henkel Foundation.
